An Overview of Adoption Law
In West Virginia

Maria W. Hughes, Esq. is an attorney in Charleston, West Virginia, where her practice concentrates in employment law and adoption law. With respect to adoption law, Ms. Hughes has experience with most all aspects of the finalization of in-state adoptions, including termination of parental rights, abandonment, and step-parent adoptions. She also has experience assisting clients with the unsealing of adoption records and with obtaining the State of West Virginia’s recognition of foreign adoption decrees. Ms. Hughes earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University in 1987 and a J.D. from West Virginia University College of Law in 1990. She is licensed to practice law in West Virginia. She has worked closely with The Gabriel Project of West Virginia, Inc. to hold adoption workshops in Charleston and Huntington, in collaboration with Catholic Community Services, the West Virginia Catholic Foundation, and Mission West Virginia, Inc. Ms. Hughes is also a member of the Board of Directors for Mission WV and a member of the Board of Trustees for the St. Thomas More Catholic Society.
